Downtown's PlayhouseSquare is the world's largest theater restoration project, and the country's largest performing arts center outside of Lincoln Center in New York City. Eight theaters - the Palace, State, Ohio, Allen, Hanna, 14th Street, Kennedy's Cabaret, and the Westfield Insurance Studio Theatre provide a home for touring Broadway shows, concerts, comedy, opera, dance and children's programming.

The original five venues (Ohio, Palace, State, Allen and Hanna) were constructed in the pre-Great Depression 1920s in a restrained classical style, with lavish use of marble, expensive woods, murals, tapestries, and gilded plaster relief. They're worth a visit, even when there's no show going on.

In the 1970s, a grass-roots effort saved the historic theatres from the wrecking ball, restoring and re-opening them one by one, ushering in a new era of downtown revitalization, which was heralded as "one of the top 10 successes in Cleveland history."

A visit to PlayhouseSquare should be near the top of your "To Do" list when you're in Cleveland.

Shows at PlayhouseSquare are, as you might imagine, intensely popular. But there's always a chance, particularly Monday to Thursday, that tickets for any particular show are available.
